Motorcycle Brake Parts Guide: Pads, Discs and Shoes

Brakes are the most important safety system on your bike. Here's how pads, discs and shoes work and when to change them.

Your brakes are the most important safety system on the bike. Knowing the parts — and replacing them on time — keeps you safe in traffic.

The three main brake parts

  • Brake pads (disc brakes) — grip the disc to slow the wheel; they wear with every stop.
  • Brake disc / rotor — the metal disc the pads clamp onto; it can warp or wear thin.
  • Brake shoes (drum brakes) — expand inside the drum to create friction; common on rear wheels.

When to replace

Replace pads when they're worn close to the metal backing, or if you hear a squealing or grinding sound. A pulsing lever usually means a warped disc. Spongy brakes may mean air or worn fluid — not the pads themselves.

Why genuine brake parts matter

Copy brake pads fade under heat and can damage your disc. Genuine pads are engineered for your bike's weight and speed — a safety item that's never worth gambling on.

Tip: Always replace pads in pairs (or both shoes) and bed them in gently for the first 100 km.
